The IELTS test structure
Modules
There are two modules of IELTS:
- Academic Module
- General Training Module
Additionally, there is a separate test offered by IELTS test partners, known as IELTS Life Skills

- Primarily, the Academic version is intended for individuals who need to enroll in universities and other institutions of higher education. Moreover, it is suitable for professionals, such as medical doctors and nurses, who plan to study or practice in an English-speaking country. Therefore, it plays a key role in helping candidates meet the language requirements for academic and professional settings.
- General Training is proposed for those intending to embrace non-scholarly preparing or to pick up work understanding, or for movement purposes.
- Life Skills is specifically designed for individuals who need to demonstrate their English listening and speaking skills at the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) levels A1 or B1.
- Moreover, it serves as an essential requirement for those applying for a ‘family of a settled person’ visa, indefinite leave to remain, or British citizenship.
- In addition, the test helps ensure that applicants possess the necessary communication abilities to successfully integrate into life in the UK.
- Therefore, Life Skills plays a crucial role in supporting individuals on their path toward legal residency or citizenship in England.
Four different parts of IELTS test are:
- Reading: 1 hour
- Writing: 1 hour
- Listening: 30 minutes (in addition to 10
minutes’ exchange time) - Speaking: 11–14 minutes
The test absolute time is: 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Results
For computer conveyed test, results are released among 5-7 days. For paper-based test, Test Report Form is presented to the test takers 13 days after their test. This report shows:
- Overall Band Score (from 1-9) for every
section of test (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking) - Regardless of whether IELTS Academic or
General Training was ended - The test taker’s photograph, first
language, nationality and date of birth. - Test takers get one duplicate of their
Test Report Form, aside from test takers who are applying to (CIC) Department
of Citizenship and Immigration Canada or UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) who
get two duplicates.
Test Report Forms are substantial for two years.
